The Midland YMCA began in 1953 with 1162 charter members. A temporary board with George H.W. Bush as Chairman set out to raise the funds needed to start the organization. In September 1953, the first elected Board was installed with Curt Inman serving as chairman. These Midlanders were committed to providing adequate recreational and social facilities for the families who had been brought here to work in various phases of the oil industry. Programs began with a bicycle club for boys and girls and a men's volleyball class that met in the school gym.
The first office was located in the old Pioneer Gas Company offices at 211 1/2 North Colorado. Two moves later, the offices were located in a donated house at 806 N. Big Spring, the current YMCA site.
In early 1957, a new YMCA building was proposed. On May 25, 1959, ground was broken for the new building. On November 10, 1960, the present building was dedicated to the serving of the whole family at a meeting open to the public.
Today, in addition to the Central YMCA facility, the YMCA of Midland operates a fully staffed preschool Child Development Center and utilizes the gymnasiums or cafeterias at ten MISD elementary campuses for after school programs.
The YMCA of Midland is an association of people of all ages, ethnic groups and religious affiliations united with a mission to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
Major program services include after school child care, summer day camps, teen Youth & Government, aquatic programs, youth sports, adult sports, parent-child programs, Y-Indian Guides and Y-Indian Princesses, and adult and senior health and fitness programs. YMCA programs teach youth and families important values such as honesty, responsibility and respect. Through a variety of fun and rewarding activities, youth also develop valuable skills while they gain confidence and self-esteem.
The YMCA's experience lies in building "strong kids, strong families and strong communities." We have more...come see!
