Y-Indian Games

Choose a game for the next tribal meeting.

Treasure Hunt

Supplies: Magic marker, inexpensive prizes, blindfold, posterboard with inexpensive prizes drawn on it.

This game is similar to pin the tail on the donkey. Draw prizes available on posterboard and stick on wall. Blindfold the child, have him touch the posterboard with a marker after you spin him several times. Child wins the prize he marks.

Wink

Supplies: Deck of cards

Select the same number of cards as you have participants. Include the Ace of Spades as one of these cards. Have group sit in circle. Pass one card out to each participant. They keep their card a secret. The person with the Ace of Spades is "it". "It" then tries to eliminate the other players by sticking their tongue out at them. They must do this without others in the circle seeing them.

Once "it" has eliminated you by sticking their tongue out at you, you are dead and must throw your card to the center of the circle. If someone sees "it" stick his tongue out at another person, he can accuse "it" of having the Ace.

If he is right the game is over; if not, play continues until all participants are dead or until "it" has been caught.

Bead Chase

Supplies: String, 2 beads

Thread two beads onto a long closed string circle. The tribe stands around the string with both hands on the string. One brave is selected to stand in the circle and find either bead (members of the circle hide the beads in their hands). The object is for the group to move the beads continuously around the circle without being detected. When the Brave in the middle guesses correctly who has the bead, the person with the bead is now "it".

Hobo Relay

Supplies: Old Clothes

Divide group into team. Have a starting point. Have team members run to pole of old clothes, put on clothes, run back, take off clothes. Second person picks up clothes, runs down, puts clothes on, runs back, undresses, etc. First team through wins.

Supplies: Dice

Divide into groups of at least 4. Give each group a dice. Each group is to try to reach 23. when you say go, the first person rolls the dice and hands it to person in the circle to his right. This person rills the dice and group adds it out loud to the previous roll. This continues until the group hits 23. If they go over 23 they must start over. Winner is the first team to roll 23 exactly.

Pick-Up-Wampum

Supplies:  Large bowl, kitchen spatula, 25 marble-sized cotton balls, blindfold (optional)

Set bowl on the floor or on a table and scatter the cotton balls around it.  At a given signal, either parent or child takes the spatula and tries to get as many cotton balls into the bowl as possible in 20 seconds.  For more fun, blindfold the person trying to get the balls into the bowl.

Scrambled Birch Bark

Supplies:  2 identical newspapers

Divide the tribe into 2 teams and give each a scrambled newspaper.  The object is to be the first to reassemble the newspaper in proper order within a given time limit.   Teamwork is needed.

Scrambled Moccasins

Supplies:  1 shoe from each adult

Place all shoes in the center of the room and scramble them up.  At a signal, the children rush to find their Big Brave's shoe.  The first child to get back the shoe on Big Brave's foot is the winner.
Alternative:  Race against time instead each other.  Repeat to see if the first record can be broken.

Paper Cup and Plate Balancing

Supplies:  Paper plates and cups

Each dad, taking turns, sits on floor with feet extended and head back.  Little brave then starts balancing as many plates and cups on the big brave's forehead as possible.  Start with a plate and then alternate cups and plates.   Select someone to keep track of how many cups and plates are balanced before they fall.  Once they fall, the parent and child reverse position and balance more plates and cups on the child's head.  The father-son pair with most points (1 per plate and 1 per cup) is the winner.

Tin Can Toss

Supplies:  Tin can, nail, plywood board, bottle caps

Nail tin can onto a board.  Have the sons toss bottle caps into the can for points.  Set the distance from the can with one line for boys and another line farther back for dads.  This is a good game to play before the meeting.

Potato Bowling

Supplies:  Newspaper, masking tape, potatoes

Spread a sheet of newspaper on the floor and mark with masking tape one line 6 feet away and another ten feet away from the paper.  Boys stand at the 6 foot line and try to roll the potato onto the paper.  Dads roll from the 10 foot line.  Each person takes 3 rolls.

Balloon Relay

Supplies:  Balloons, 2 chairs

Blow up enough balloons in advance so there is 1 for each person.  Place chairs at end of room.  Line up players in 2 lines and give each person an inflated balloon.   At a signal the first players run to their chair and sit on the balloon to pop it.   When the balloon breaks that player returns to the line and the next player has a turn.  The first team to break all balloons wins.

Ping-Pong Blow

Supplies:  Table, ping-pong ball

Divide the group into 2 teams, placing dads on one side of table and sons the other.   Place the ping-pong ball in the center of the table.  The object is for each team to blow the ball off the table on it's opponent's side.  Only blowing is permitted; hands must be kept out of play.  Each time the ball goes over the opponent's side of the table, the other team scores 1 point.  Set a total of 5-10 points as the winning score.

Peanut Race

Supplies:  Unshelled peanuts, table knives or craft sticks

Place a bowl of unshelled peanuts on each of 2 chairs at one end of the room.   Each player is given an ordinary table knife or craft stick.  On "Go" the first person in each of 2 lines puts as many peanuts as possible on the knife and carries knife and peanuts to other end of room.  When the first person finishes, the next in line follows.  Teams continue until everyone has a turn.   Any peanuts dropped on the way cannot be picked up.  Winning team is the one with most peanuts at the other end of the room.
