Learning to Swim at the Midland YMCA is More Than Just Stroke Development
Through guided discovery of activities and creative teaching methods, each level of the YMCA Swim Lesson program teaches age appropriate skills. Using tools like kickboards, hoops and diving rings, children can explore skills and identify the movements that work best for each skill taught. We work with students on more than just stroke development!
Child-Centered Approach
This approach offers more active involvement from each child and a better fundamental understanding of swimming. Each child can learn through play, hands-on experiences, having fun and creative repetition.
Personal Safety and Rescue Skills
These activities, incorporated into all our classes, help children to identify potential hazards, avoid danger and learn how to get help when needed. Even the youngest toddler can learn how to help themselves or someone else in danger. Older youth learn rescue and life-saving techniques that may prepare them for their first job.
Boating Safety
Because so many of our personal recreational activities include boats, skis and personal water crafts, children need to learn about basic boating, open water skills and safety procedures. We teach your children to protect themselves wherever they swim and to still have fun!
Peer Groups
Children are taught in small groups with others their own age and skill level. Each child will be assessed to assure that they are in the correct class.
Water Sports and Games
Water sports and games are used to reinforce the children's learning at all levels of swimming. They provide the kids an opportunity to apply their current swimming skills, find interesting ways to enjoy the water, develop new skills and enhance their endurance.
Character Development
Building self-esteem and reinforcing positive values is an element woven into all YMCA programming. Children and staff are encouraged to exhibit behaviors that are reflective of the YMCA core values of Honesty, Respect, Responsibility, Caring and Faith.
Family Huddles
With the help of our "Family Huddle" information sheets, parents will be able to reinforce the learning that took place in class and practice the appropriate skills while not in swim lessons.
